Hair Transplant

Hair transplant is a procedure in which a board-certified dermatological or plastic surgeon moves hair to a bald area of the head. The surgeon usually moves hair from the back or side of the head (donor area) to the front or top of the head (planted area). Sometimes beard hair is used if the head donor area is not enough.

Hair transplants typically occur in a clinic under local anesthesia without any pain.

Pattern baldness is responsible for the majority of hair loss. This comes down to genetics. However, there are some other factors such as:

  • Diet
  • Stress
  • Illness
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Medications

What happens during a hair transplant?

The hair transplant procedure takes around 8 hours to be completed. The doctor cleans the scalp thoroughly, then local anesthesia is applied to the donor area which is often the back of the head.

In Dr Naeem’s clinic, we use follicular unit extraction (FUE) to extract the grafts from the donor area. In which, the grafts are cut out directly from the doner area using a special device. A small punch should be used here to prevent any scaring in the donor area.

Once extraction is finished, Dr Naeem draws the hair line for the patient. Drawing the hair line is based on the face and head shape of the patient and it varies from one patient to another. After that, anesthesia is applied to the desired implanting area. Then Dr Naeem himself open channels for implantation. In Dr Naeem’s clinic, we have three techniques for channels opening which are:

  • 1- FUE: in this technique, the channels are opened using a special needle. This technique has some drawbacks, for example, 5-7% of the implanted grafts will not live, also, the hair density will be low. Using a needle to open channels little or no control over depth, angle, and direction. And, thus, results are not natural, where direction of the hair will be pointy.
  • 2- DHI: which refers to Direct Hair Implantation is an advanced technique in hair implantation. CHOI pens are used which are special pens that have a needle like head and a path that holds a graft. CHOI pens come in different sizes that fits different sizes of the grafts. Every graft is inserted individually into a CHOI pen, then the pen is used to open the channel and pressed to release the graft at the same time. DHI technique has 100% success rate, and you will have a natural look. However, maximum density cannot be achieved. DHI often used in Dr Naeem’s clinic for implanting without shaving.
  • 3- Sapphire: blades are made from a single crystal that is synthetic sapphire. This material is harder than standard steel to keep their sharpness for a long time. Sapphire crystals are turned into perfect blades by controlling every stage of production in special machines. Dr Naeem uses Sapphire blade to open the channels in the desired angle, direction and frequency. This process is one of the most critical stages of sapphire hair transplantation. Using Sapphire ensures the natural hair look and the maximum density possible. After that, the grafts are inserted into the channels using special forceps. Sapphire blades come in different width sizes such as 0.9, 1, 1.3, 1,5 mm. Dr Naeem ensures the use of the proper width size for every patient which depends on the skin type, the scalp and the implanted area.
Using Sapphire achieves 100% success rate, reduces the recovery time, causes less tissue damage and eliminates the possibility of inflammation in the planted area. Moreover, all the channels can be opened in the desired angle if used properly by a dermatological or plastic surgeon. In Dr Naeem’s clinic, we use Sapphire technique for over 95% of our cases.s
What happens after a hair transplant?

The scalp may be sore, and some people will have headache after the procedure. Medications are given to the patients after the procedure such as:

  • Pain killers.
  • Antibiotics.
  • Anti-inflammatory medications.

Most people can return to work after few days, and list of instructions of do and don’t are given to the patients.

The transplanted hair will fall out two to six weeks after the procedure. This makes way for new hair growth. The final result of the hair transplant surgery is achieved after 12-18 months.

Side effects from a hair transplant procedure are usually minor and clear up within few weeks, they include:

  • Bleeding.
  • Swelling of the scalp.
  • Crust that forms on some areas of the scalp.
  • Numbness or lack of sensation.
  • Itching.
  • Inflammation or infection of the hair follicles, which is known as folliculitis.
  • Shock loss, or sudden but typically temporary loss of the transplanted hair.
